A Philosophy of Presence

Much of the art once woven into everyday African life now meets us behind glass. Stools, doors and vessels once touched, used and passed between generations became “artifacts”… collected, classified and preserved. There is a quiet danger in that word. Artifacts can make a living creative lineage feel like finished history, as though inheritance marks the end of a story rather than our place within its continuation.

Grain and Stone’s first expression, A Philosophy of Presence, begins with a desire to close that distance. To return art to life, and to continue the creative languages carried to us. Each work begins with the designer, through a sketch, a story, sometimes simply the grain of wood or character of stone. It grows through collaboration with artists and craftspeople whose hands, knowledge and ways of seeing become part of the work. Developed over a year and a half, the works draw from African sculpture and material culture, folklore and oral tradition, architecture, landscape and nature. Not as a fixed aesthetic, but as living languages from which something new can emerge.

By design, parts of the work are allowed to remain unresolved. If your eye reaches for symmetry, balance or correction, stay with that impulse. Ask what taught you to see difference as something unfinished. You may still return to the familiar, to balance, to uniformity. But return having wandered beyond it, having seen what else might be possible.

Presence begins there. Before correction. Before certainty. Before deciding what something should be. And in that freedom, art belongs to life again.
